"Moroccan rug" is one of the most-searched rug terms in the world, and also one of the most misused. Walk into any home decor retailer and you'll see polypropylene rugs sold as Moroccan because they have a diamond pattern. Real Moroccan rugs are a family of distinct tribal weaving traditions, each with its own colour palette, technique, and origin region. Here's how to tell them apart — and which one belongs in your room.
The four styles you actually need to know
| Style | Look | Origin | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beni Ourain | Ivory wool with black diamond lattice | Atlas Mountains, Berber tribes | Modern, minimalist, Scandinavian rooms |
| Azilal | Cream base with bright multicolour abstract motifs | Azilal region, Middle Atlas | Bohemian, eclectic, kids' rooms |
| Boucherouite | Recycled fabric scraps in riotous colour | Rural Berber communities | Boho, maximalist, art-piece rooms |
| Beni Mguild | Reds, oranges, deep purples in geometric pattern | Middle Atlas Berber tribes | Warm, layered, transitional spaces |
Beni Ourain: The Famous One
If you've seen a "Moroccan rug" in a Pinterest mood board, it was almost certainly a Beni Ourain. They're the ivory-and-black diamond-pattern rugs that became Instagram-famous in the 2010s and now show up in every Scandinavian, Japandi, and modern minimalist home in the world.
How to identify a real one
- Wool only. Always undyed, naturally creamy white wool from Berber sheep in the Atlas Mountains. Anything pure-white is bleached or fake.
- Asymmetric, hand-drawn diamonds. The pattern is never perfectly aligned — small irregularities mean it was woven by a person, not a machine.
- Long, slightly shaggy pile. Knotted, not flatweave. The pile is dense and high (1.5–2 inches).
- Black or dark brown lines — never grey, never blue. Berber weavers use only undyed wool from naturally dark sheep.
Where to put one
Living rooms, bedrooms, and reading nooks. Beni Ourain rugs are quiet enough to anchor a busy room without competing with art, furniture, or other patterns. They're the modern designer's safe choice.
Sizes you'll typically find
Authentic vintage Beni Ourain rugs come in irregular sizes (the loom width determines the rug width). New production rugs in the Beni Ourain style are made in standard sizes (5×7, 6×9, 8×10, 9×12). For oversized rooms, custom is the only option — design your custom Beni Ourain-style rug here.
Azilal: The Colourful Cousin
Azilal rugs come from the Azilal region in the Middle Atlas, woven by Berber women using cream-coloured wool as a base with abstract, often whimsical multicolour motifs — usually featuring symbols passed down through generations (eyes, fertility symbols, tribal markings).
Identifying features
- Cream or ivory base, but with bright accents in red, blue, yellow, green, pink
- Asymmetric, abstract motifs — never repeating geometric pattern
- Often features stylised symbols (diamond, eye, branch)
- Slightly shorter pile than Beni Ourain
Where to put one
Bohemian living rooms, kids' rooms, eclectic studies. The colour-pop quality means an Azilal works as the room's statement piece — let the rest of the room be neutral.
Boucherouite: The Recycled Art Rug
Boucherouite ("buoosherweet") rugs are made from recycled fabric scraps — clothing, sheets, plastic, anything woven into a rug shape. They emerged in the late 20th century when Berber women started using leftover textiles instead of wool, partly because of cost, partly because the result was so striking.
What makes them special
- Wildly colourful and pattern-mixed
- Each one is unique — no two Boucherouite rugs ever look identical
- Lighter than wool rugs (cotton, polyester, recycled fabric base)
- Cheaper than Beni Ourain (less labour, recycled materials)
Where to put one
Maximalist or boho rooms where the rug is the art. Often used in kids' rooms because the bright colours hide stains. Don't pair with another bold pattern — the Boucherouite is the pattern.
Beni Mguild: The Warm One
Less famous than Beni Ourain but more flexible. Beni Mguild rugs come from the same Middle Atlas region as Beni Ourain but use rich, dyed wool in deep reds, burnt oranges, and aubergines, woven into geometric patterns.
Identifying features
- Burgundy, rust, deep orange, and purple wool tones
- Often features rectangle and chevron geometry
- Medium-pile knotted construction
Where to put one
Living rooms with brown or jewel-tone furniture, transitional rooms that need warmth, or as a contrast under a blue or grey sofa. They look spectacular in winter-leaning palettes.
How to spot a fake "Moroccan" rug
Mass retailers sell tufted polypropylene and wool-blend rugs marketed as "Moroccan style" — not the same thing as a hand-knotted Berber rug. Three quick checks:
- Look at the back. A real handwoven rug shows the pattern from behind almost as clearly as the front. A tufted rug has a fabric backing glued on.
- Check the fringe. On hand-knotted rugs the fringe is part of the rug structure (the warp threads). On tufted rugs the fringe is sewn on as decoration.
- Pull a fibre. Real wool feels and burns like hair. Polypropylene melts.

Sourcing Moroccan-style rugs
Authentic vintage Beni Ourain rugs are increasingly rare and expensive (proper vintage pieces start at $2,000+ and can reach $20,000). New production by traditional weavers — whether in Morocco or in the comparable Berber-style traditions of northern India — gives you the same look at a fraction of the price, fully custom-sized.
Our Moroccan rug collection is woven by master weavers in Bhadohi using the same hand-knotting techniques as Berber tradition, in standard and custom sizes. For an exact-size custom rug in any of these styles, start a custom rug here.
Quick decision guide
- Modern, minimalist, neutral palette → Beni Ourain
- Eclectic, kids' room, statement-piece moment → Azilal
- Maximalist, boho, art-on-the-floor → Boucherouite
- Warm, layered, traditional-leaning room → Beni Mguild
